Yoga 101: what & why
The word yoga, conjures images of bendy, flexible humans holding reality-defying postures with serene expressions on their face. And yes this can be part of our experience of yoga, but yoga is at it’s essence, about the full spectrum of our inner experience, and is a pathway to see the awareness that our inner and outer worlds are more one than divided. Yoga is a way of being deeply shaped by and aligned with more eastern philosophies. The asanas or postures are only one branch of a much wider and deeper tradition.
The five koshas
In yoga philosophy, there’s a beautiful concept for the human experience called the koshas, a Sanskrit word that translates to “sheath” or “layer.”
Just as we talk of the layers of an onion, the term kosha describes our layers. These aren’t just physical layers like skin, muscle, bone, but subtler aspects of our inner experience, of our body, mind and spirit, that together make up who we are.
